When You Feel Like You’ll Never Change
When You Feel Like You’ll Never Change
BY: BARB RAVELING
One of the questions I get asked most often is, “Will I ever change?” When you’ve been struggling with the same habit for years—maybe even a life time—at some point you start believing the lie: I’ll never change.

Hopelessness is Dangerous
Hopelessness is dangerous. It threatens to keep your head under water, convincing you that another breath is not possible. This is not your reality. You are created in the image of God. Hope is in your DNA as a son or daughter, given by your resurrected King.
Hold tightly to the hope you have in Jesus, and don't let go.

In HIS Image
This corporate video, used to promote a product, says a lot. Many of you have likely seen this video but I think it illustrates a powerful message in 3 minutes. Here is my take-away and your feedback is welcome.
We are created in the image of God and that image has been marred by sin. Shame, a consequential reality of sin, impacts our relationships with God and others. It says, very powerfully (albeit toxic), "You cannot be loved in your brokenness. If you are transparent and let others see you as you are, you will be rejected. You are not enough. You are not talented enough. Rich enough. Funny enough. Popular enough. You fall short of BEING lovable and accepted so wear the mask and pretend because it is better than risking rejection."
If a shame-based individual were to describe themselves to a forensic artist, what would their description look like? It would likely look like the story line the voice of shame creates. It looks like "not enough".
Yet, when the unashamed, grace of God comes crashing into our shame-based assumptions about who we are, we find that accepting our acceptance is what He wants for us. As we find healing for our shame, and begin to let Him restore His image in us, what begins to happen? If others were to describe us to a forensic artist, we may be surprised to learn that when the drawing is complete, it looks a lot like the very face of Jesus Christ. Why? Our resemblance to the family cannot help but shine through.
When we create God in our broken image, He becomes as rude, disgruntled, unattractive, and fussy as we are. When God restores His image in us, our family DNA has freedom to express itself.

Progress Not Perfection
Gradual change over time is sustainable. Just put one foot in front of the other. There's plenty of grace while you are in the process. When you have a bad day, what matters is that you decide to get back on track and that you don't give up.
